Current Meet Report

Edison at Newport Harbor (Feb. 13, 2008)

The Newport Harbor High surf team narrowly defeated a strong Edison team (7-2) 85-83 in non league competition at 56 th street in Newport. The competition was fierce as the score remained tied after 6 heats. The sailors won each of the last two heats by a slim margin of one point to run its record to 9 -1.

Newport won five of the eight heats and three of the four events.

The boy’s short board squad won 44-40 while winning three of the four heats. The first heat of the morning was won by Victor Done who registered the top avg. wave score of the competition – 6.8. Eric Heimstaedt took second in heat one. Also registering a second place finish in the following short board heats were Cameron Clark and Mark Contreras. Placing third were Bobby Okvist, Tyler Tarlow and Jared Cassidy.

The body board squad won 11-10. Yuji Kanbayashi took second place and teammate Joe Suzuki placed third in a close competition.

The boy’s long board squad won by the identical score 11-10. Robert Guy placed second and Andy Delorme took third in another close contest.

The girl’s short board squad lost 11-10 and dropped its unblemished record for the season to 8-1. Finishing first place for the eight time this year was Kaleigh Gilchrist.

Hailey Sandberg’s first place finish was not enough as the girl’s long board squad lost 12-9,

Next up for Newport is Edison on March 5th at River jetty north in Huntington Beach..
