Newport Wins 2010 ISF State Championship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Saturday April 10 Newport Harbor High surf team competed in the coveted ISF Stat Championship. This is a year end tournament where the top schools in California compete.

The nine schools competing were Newport, Carlsbad, Malibu, LaCosta Canyon, Dana Hills, San Dieguito, Santa Barbra, LaJolla, and Ventura.

At stake were the five individual venues – short board –men and women; long board – men and women and body board plus the team award for ISF state championship.

Newport won both short board – men and women, second place in women long board and won the overall school trophy of ISF state championship.

No one could remember a school winning both short board competitions and winning the overall award!!

The men short board team consisted of Max Colvin, Blake Davis, Jared Cassidy, Colin Moran, Will Laidlaw, Canon Call, Bobby Okvist, Erik Heimstaedt, and Fritz Howser.

The first round saw Newport dominate the La Jolla team. The semifinal match was very close with Newport winning by a narrow margin of 32-31 over a very strong San Dieguito team. The final match was against perennial state powerhouse Carlsbad. Newport fell behind 13- 8 in the first of three heats. Heat two had senior Call and freshmen Moran and Laidlaw in the surf as they tied the score with a 13-8 win. The last meet of the men’s short board was a close battle of some of the best high school surfers in the state and in the end Newport had a 2,3,4 finish by Okvist, Heimstaedt and Howser and claim a 33-30 team win of the coveted ISFG short board trophy.

The girl’s short board team entered the surf at Oceanside beach determined to do the same. The girl’s team of : Kaleigh Gilchrest, Shelby Detmers and Ali Hayes dominated the entire contest – first beating La Costa Canyon, and then powerhouse Carlsbad in the first two rounds. The finals saw Newport dominate again 13-8 led by a one, two, five finish of Gilchrist, Detmers and Hayes. This secured the second trophy of the day for Newport.

The girl’s long board team of Devyn Hartnett, Ali Hayes (performing double duty, and using a borrowed board) and Hannah Nguyen won the first contest over La Costa 12-9. In the semi final round, a very close competition, Newport won again over Carlsbad. But Newport met a strong Dana Hills squad which defeated them in the finals completion – resulting in the sailors receiving second place of ISF state girl’s long board.

At the end of the long day of high school surfing competition - Newport received the trophy for top school in the state – 2010 ISF state champion.

Led by Coach Scott Morlan (click here for photo) and a team of talented surfers this day was the biggest day in surfing for Newport Harbor high school and probably any high school with a surf team to have both short board trophies, a second in girls long board and the overall trophy designating Newport Harbor as the overall ISF top high school in the state.
