south coast finals write-up day 1

For the first time the Newport Harbor High school surf team competed in the South Coast League Individual tournament. Competing with them were San Clemente , Laguna Beach and Dana Hills . The two day event was held at Uppers in San Onofre starting on Wednesday under sunny skies with chest high to head high surf and a slight offshore breeze. The first day's competition was for the honors of determining the best individual boy's short boarder amongst the thirty six contestants (nine from each school.)
The preliminary six heats saw Newport advance six surfers to the quarterfinals. Taking second and advancing from heat one was Joey Head with an average wave score of 4.2. Heat two saw Reagan Riley take third and advance with Colin McElroy finishing sixth. Steve Farmer finished fifth in heat 3. Joe Riggio and Christian Morabito advanced from heat four finishing third and fourth respectively. Daniel Shea hit the third highest wave score for the prelims with a 4.8, taking first place and advancing. Heat six advanced both Newport surfers - Charlie Buckingham and Brett Catron finishing first and fourth.
In the quarterfinals heats Newport advanced three of its short boarders. In heat seven Shea placed third and advanced. Heat eight saw both Newport surfers advance with Head scoring a 5.7 average wave score placing first with Riley placing third. Riggio and Buckingham placed fifth and sixth in heat ten of the quarters.
The semifinals consisted of seven San Clemente surfers, three Newport surfers and one surfer from Laguna Beach . Heat eleven saw three San Clemente surfers advance to the finals with Riley from Newport finishing sixth. Heat twelve saw two more San Clemente surfers advance to the finals with Daniel Shea joining them by taking second place in the heat with a 5.3 score. Head just missed advancing placing fifth.
The finals was an event dominated by the quantity of San Clemente surfers – five, but the skills of Daniel Shea prevailed by hitting two big waves averaging 5.4 and winning the contest. This event has been dominated over the past years by San Clemente but this year Shea showed his stuff and ended up top South coast league surfer.
Thursday events will be held at the same location. They will include boy's long board, girls short and long board and body board.
