south coast finals write-up day 2

With an early morning offshore breeze and 3-4 foot glassy sets the four South Coast High schools of Newport Beach , Laguna Beach , San Clemente and Dana Hills concluded the annual South Coast Individual Surfing tournament. Each school would surf three contestants in the events of girl's long board, boy's long board, girl's short board and four contestants in the body board event. Each event consisted of two semi final heats and a final heat of the top three surfers from each semi heat.

The body board event saw Matt Kretschmar place second in his heat and advance while Harry Tully placed fourth and Cameron White and Tommy D'Ellisco placed sixth. Kretschmar placed fifth in the finals which were won by San Clemente .

In the girl's long board event, Lisa Turk registered the second high wave score of these semis with a 4.5 and placed second, advancing her into the finals. Mahea Hookano and Devon Falasco placed fourth and fifth in their heats. The finals saw some superb surfing by all the girls as some of the high wave scores for the day were registered in this event. Lisa Turk placed third with a 4.7 average as Dana Hills won the event.

Leading Newport in the boys long board event were Jered Mell and Tanner Prairie who placed second and third in the semi round and advanced to the finals. Christopher LoMenzo placed fourth. This event was won by Dan Hills with Prairie and Mell placing fifth and sixth respectively.

The last event of the day was the girl's short board. Erica Hosseini took second in the first semi and advanced. The second semi saw Devon Falasco take third also advancing with Amie Benjamin placing sixth. The last heat of the day opened with Hosseinin scoring an 8.5, the high wave score of the day, which was more than enough for her to win the event. Falasco finished the event in fourth.

Overall the two day tournament was a huge success for the Sailors with Daniel Shea and Erica Hosseini clutching individual perennial trophies for top short board surfers in the league.

Newport resumes league meets on November 30 against Laguna Beach at Salt Creek at 6:15
