Laguna Beach Meet Report, 10/10/06

The Newport Harbor High school surf team began its season Tuesday morning under partly cloudy skies and knee-high surf at 56th Street against Laguna Beach. This is the third year of competing in the South Coast league.

Newport’s team dominated the surf with a 108-60 victory while surfing a mix of three freshman, five sophomores, five juniors and eight seniors. The Sailors won all five of the events while winning seven of the eight meets and placing eighteen surfers in the top three positions in these eight heats.

The boy’s short board squad won three of the four heats with a combined score of 49-35. The sophomores dominated this event with Mark Contreras and Cameron Clark taking first in their heats and Victor Done placing second. Senior Chris LoMenzo won his heat in his first high school short board competition. Taking second place in their respective heats were seniors Regan Riley and Taylor Lobdell while Evan Hochwald placed third.

The boy’s long board squad swept the top three positions and winning 15-6. Placing first for the long boarders was LoMenzo barely beating out Junior Robert Guy in a tie breaker while sophomore Andy Delorme placed third.

The body board squad was lead by first place finisher senior Matt Kretschmar. Junior Robert Murrow placed third.

The girl’s two teams were perfect as the long board and short board teams swept the first three positions. Leading the short board team to a 15-6 victory was newcomer freshman Kaleigh Gilchrist. Placing second and third for this squad were juniors Hailey Sandberg and Camille Collett. Leading the girl’s long board squad to a perfect score of 15-6 was another newcomer, freshman Devyn Hartnett taking first, followed by junior team mates Sandberg and Hannah Patrick placing second and third.

The next competition will be against a very strong Dana Hills team at Salt Creek on Tuesday, October 17th, at 6:15 a.m.
