Newport Harbor at Laguna Beach (Oct 30 2007)

The Newport Harbor High school surf team moved its perfect record to four straight with a 98-68 win over Laguna Beach High at Salt Creek. Newport opened a wide margin of victory in the first two heats as they were lead by recent new members to the U. S. A. Surf team Chase Wilson and Kaleigh Gilchrist. Gilchrist’s big 6.5 on her final wave and Wilson’s 6.5 score were enough to place first and second in their respective heats before quickly leaving the contest to join the USA team in a competition against Australia at Huntington later in the morning. Placing third in the girl’s short board heat was Camille Collett as Canon Call took third in boy’s short board heat. As a result both of these squads remain undefeated in the South Coast League competition.

The next boy’s body board heat was won by Victor Done. Done’s average wave score of 5.3 was high for the contest short boarders and assured him of his fourth straight first place finish. Jared Cassidy placed second in the same heat.

The girls’ long board event saw Newport sweep the top three positions as the squad registered its fourth straight win. Leading the win was Devyn Hartnett’s first place finish as Hailey Sandberg and Courtney Mcphee placed second and third respectively.

The body board squad won their heat as they were lead by Yuji Kanbayashi’s first place finish. Joe Suzuki placed second for the Sailors.

Andy Delorme’ first and Robert Guy’s third place finishes assured the long board team of victory.

The final two boy’s short board heats split wins with Laguna as Bobby Okvist took first in his heat and Tyler Tarlow took second with Addison Giddings placing third.

Next meet is at T Street in San Clemente on November 13 against San Clemente High school
