Dana Hills at Newport Harbor (Nov. 15 2007)

The Newport Harbor High surf team defeated Dana Hills 93-74 to close out the South Coast league competition with a record of 5-1 and finished tied for first place with San Clemente High. This is the first year since joining the South Coast league that Newport has ended the season in first place.

The victorious Sailors won the boy’s and girl’s short board competitions as well as the boy’s long board event. San Clemente won the body board and girl’s long board events.

Newport won the boy’s short board event 47-37 by winning three of the four heats. Victor Done, Mark Contreras and Cameron Clark placed first in this event. Placing second were Canon Call, and Graeme Chesnie and taking third place were Chase Wilson and Jared Cassidy. Done’s first place finish was his fifth of the year.

The girl’s short board squad ended the year with a perfect 6-0 record within league competition. Placing first and second for the winning team were Kaleigh Gilchrist with an average wave score of 5.3 and Camille Collett. Gilchrist ended the league competition with five first place finishes.

Andy Delorme 6.8 average wave score was tops for the contest as he took first place for the boy’s long board squad. Robert Guy placed second for the winning team.

Devyn Hartnett placed second in the girl’s long board event.

Joe Suzuki placed third in the body board event.

The South Coast League Individual tournament will be held on November 27 and 28 at Trestles (lowers). This annual contest determines the top individual surfer in each of the five surfing categories.
