San Clemente at Newport Harbor (Oct 22 2007)

The Newport Harbor High school surf team continued its winning ways with a hard fought victory over arch rival San Clemente 85-83. This was the first time that Newport has beaten state powerhouse San Clemente in league competition. The contest see-sawed back and forth between the eight heats. Newport started the competition with a 12-9 victory in the first of four boys short board heats as Chase Wilson and Eric Heimstaedt took first and second places respectively. Wilson’s opening long barrel maneuver gained him an average wave score of 7.8 which was high for the day’s competition. The Sailors opened a larger lead as the girl’s short board squad won 14-7. Kaleigh Gilchrist and Camille Collett took first and second with Gilchrest scoring a 7.5 on one of her two winning waves.

The Tars lead shrunk to six points as Newport lost the second boys short board heat and the boy’s long board heat. Robert Guy and Victor Done placed first in these two heats. Done has placed first in all competition this year.

The girl’s long board squad helped Newport add to its lead with an 11-10 victory as Hailey Sandberg placed first.

But then San Clemente captured the lead 64-62 as they swept the top three spots and won the body board event.

With two short board heats remaining and perfect overhead waves aided by a strong off shore breeze Casey Bushong lead his squad to an 11-10 win with the sixth first place finish for the surfing Sailors.

Needing one more first place finish, Cameron Clark led the final short board squad to a 12-9 victory as Graeme Chesnie contributed an important third place finish.

As a result of today’s terrific performance Newport stands on top of the South Coast league rankings with a 3-0 record for the overall team, boy’s short board and girl’s short board and girl’s long board squads.
