The seventh annual Newport Harbor High Classic Surf Event will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 1 & 2, 2006 at 56th Street in Newport Beach. The event is an open invitation to any one who surfs - from mini-groms to seasoned pros. Bragging rights are high in each division to walk away with a title as one of Newport’s best surfers. With great sponsor support coming from Quicksilver, Roxy, Smith Optical, Surfside Sports, Vestal, Dakine and Gallos of Balboa, this year's event is sure to be a treat for contestants and spectators alike.

After seven years, the Newport Classic has developed into an awesome community event focusing on the youth of the community. Last year's event fielded a record 149 contestants as well as hundreds of spectators.  This unique surf contest singles out elementary (K-5), middle (6-8) and high (9-12) schools as separate divisions. The five open divisions include Men's Shortboard, Women's Short and Longboard, Longboard, Bodyboard and the Expression Session (Air Show). Surfers of any age may compete in the open divisions.

Newport Beach standout surfers Josh Hoyer and Geoff Moysa will be in attendance.

This is the primary fundraiser for the Newport Harbor High Surf Team, as all proceeds from this event will go to support the High School Team.

Entry fee is $30 ($35 beach sign up) and includes a logo T-shirt and lunch on both days.

Trophies and prizes from the sponsors and local donors will be awarded to the top six finishers in each division.

Numerous raffles of items ranging from clothing wear to a surfboard will be held during the two-day event concluding with the awards ceremony on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Individual results from the two-day event will be available on this Web site Monday following the contest.

The Newport Harbor High School Surf Team has grown into an impressive program. After many years in the Sea View League, Newport’s surf team now competes in the South Coast league in an exciting change of events. Their teamwork and persistence earned them this spot to compete with state champion San Clemente High School in one of the top State's surf leagues. The high school surf program is a year-round program that extends into the spring semester and summer. The surf team anticipates a great season next year and is driven to win the State Championships.
